Public Consultation for A New Children’s Community Centre

The Island is a well-established York charity supporting some of our most disadvantaged, vulnerable and isolated younger people to realise their potential through positive mentoring. The charity has supported over 3000 younger people since 2007 and hope to continue to help many more.

The facility will be located on New Lane, in Huntington and will provide an ambitious, all-encompassing youth centre to support every young person in the city. The centre will include performance spaces, sports facilities, multi-sensory rooms, public cafe and vast gardens for the young people to play and learn new skills.

From the outset we were determined to ensure the young people were involved, and inputted, throughout the design process. This was achieved through holding a number of workshops with the young people and staff to discuss the brief, landscape, sustainability and design.

The public consultation was held on the proposed site, with residents and key consultees invited to get a first glimpse at the emerging scheme.

With a great amount of support for the scheme, it is anticipated that a planning application will be submitted in May.
