The Old School House & Hall
A bespoke scheme to renovate a nineteenth century Grade II listed Old School Hall in Newton-on-Ouse, originally designed by George Townsend Andrews, the revered architect behind York’s iconic central Railway Station.
Vincent & Partners took the client’s vision to transform the redundant school hall, abandoned and vacant for a number of years, and convert it into a modern and unique 4-bedroom family home. With a specialism in heritage and listed buildings, the team’s proposals were sympathetic to the architectural integrity of the property, whilst optimising its usage as a viable home for the modern family.
The ground floor of the building has a large open-plan living space with the centrepiece being an ingenious vertical pod, that sits on exposed red-brick stilts creating accommodation to first and second floor. With expansive glazing to the internal walls, the occupants have exposure to the full height of the structure and its meticulously restored, original roof trusses.
Downstairs, swathes of natural light pour in through the original double-height mullion windows in the main hall. The clean lines of the new interior with its contemporary kitchen, oak flooring and monochrome palette, marry beautifully with the original fabric of the building.
Externally, The Old School House has lawned gardens and parking to the rear with pedestrian access front and back. A newly installed tiered walkway to the front of the property presents a fitting entrance in keeping with the character red brick exterior.
The Vincent & Partners team submitted an application for Listed Building Consent and worked closely with officers to gain approval.
